Modern Foreign Languages
Curriculum Overview
The National Curriculum for Languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
The MFL Curriculum offers pupils an opening into other cultures and a way to deepen their understanding of the world. At the Greetland Academy we use Primary Languages Network to support the teaching and learning of French. The children develop their French by developing four key skills.
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
Whilst developing these key skills the children are encouraged to record their work through pictures, videos, captions and sentences. Practical activities, songs and games are often used to help improve memory and recall. Visual prompts are used to support children in translating new vocabulary.
